COLUMBUS – The Lowndes County School District voted to purchase land for the new vocational-technical center at a Nov. 9 special meeting.
The board voted 3-2 in executive session, with President Jane Kilgore and Brian Clark voting no, to purchase 12.5 acres from TE Lott. The land is located behind Lowndes Funeral Home, and is near the intersection of Lehmberg Road and Highway 50. The board reportedly paid $635,000 for the land; $800,000 had been set aside for land acquisition. The purchase will be funded with money from the $44 million bond issue.
Kilgore did not announce the land had been purchased immediately after the meeting. When the board returned from executive session they merely recessed. Sources within the district confirmed the purchase within minutes of the meeting’s end on condition of anonymity, each saying that they were not authorized to release details.
Monday’s special meeting was the second in less than a week. The land purchase was not discussed Monday because all five board members were not present. [See my related story in this week’s Packet. – Ed.]
The site, which is inside the city limits, has water, sewer and electricity already present. The owner has also already performed dirt work to raise the land above the flood plain, and necessary environmental permits have already been acquired.
