A Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department deputy and his K-9 were injured in a wreck on Lehmberg Road Wednesday that took down a power pole.
Around 12:15 Wednesday afternoon Deputy Jeff Edmundson was traveling down Lehmberg Road towards Skate Zone. He was responded to a call and had his lights and siren on, and, according to witnesses, had swung out into the left lane to pass several cars.
When a Mustang pulled out into traffic from West Lehmberg Road witnesses said Edmundson apparently swerved to attempt to avoid her. The cars collided, spinning the Mustang around and sending Edmundson over the curb and onto the shoulder, where he traveled under the underpass and struck a light pole, sending at least one power line down onto the road. Traffic was blocked along Highway 82 immediately after the wreck.
Edmundson’s cruiser was smoking and flames were visible as the first units arrived on the scene, but the flames were quickly extinguished.
Edmundson reportedly suffered a head injury, but was conscious and responsive while on the scene. He was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, and later to Tupelo. The K-9 was taken to the nearby Animal Medical Clinic.
The identity of the other driver and the extent of her injuries were unavailable at press time, but they were not believed to be life-threatening.
Crews from Columbus Light and Water Department were also on scene, taking down the light pole.0
