On Oct. 20 Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant confirmed that human remains found in New Hope belong to Manuel Vasquez.
Christina Vasquez, Manual Vasquez’s wife, and Lydia Martinez, his mother-in-law, were arrested July 22 in connection with his disappearance after human remains were found in a field near at the Vasquez home in New Hope. They appeared before Justice Court Judge Ron Cooke on July 23 and were charged with murder.
The remains were not identified at the time, but were believed to belong to Vasquez. Merchant said Tuesday the identification was positive.
“The remains were identified by DNA,” he said. “It came back a 99.99 percent match. I’ve very excited, because I was concerned with the quality of the specimen we presented. It was badly damaged from being burned.”
