LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) — Columbus, Lowndes County and surrounding communities are recognized by a national group for “Blazing the Trail” for children of military families.
The Military Child Education Coalition presented an Add Mediaaward of merit to L. L. Gates and other community members.
Gates was a long time base supporter who created and improved links with her employer,EMCC and local schools and legislators.
Other community members were also honored for their work in the last decade to improve options, flexibility and opportunities for the hundreds of military children that come through Columbus Air Force Base.
Building expansions, curriculum flexibility and other changes also have made a difference for military children.
Base Vice Commander James Fisher, and Education Liaison E. J. Griffis spoke to the group about the importance of education to the military.
“So, this is only the second one we’ve done recently. So, Columbus is definitely a standout community for supporting military children,” explained Amanda Hulsey of the Military Child Education Coalition.
A number of state and local leaders were on hand for the award which was presented Wednesday night during a reception at Old Waverly.
