Hickman’s Uncle Sues City School District, Hickman
BY BRIAN JONES
COLUMBUS – An Illinois man is suing the Columbus Municipal School District and Superintendent Dr. Philip Hickman over claims that he was promised a job that never materialized.
Leslie Smith of East St. Louis, Ill., is suing Hickman and the CMSD for breach of contract, among other things. Smith is Hickman’s wife’s uncle.
According to the lawsuit, which is only one side of a legal argument, the CMSD and Hickman contacted Smith about hiring him for the position of Director of Schools, a central office-level position with a salary of $70,000. As a condition of his hire, Smith claims that he was made to obtain “State of Mississippi credentialing,” which he received in August of last year.
The suit claims that the board unanimously voted to hire Smith at its August meeting.
