Investigators with the Columbus Police Department are looking into two shooting incidents that occurred less than 48 hours apart.
The first shooting happened just before midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Columbus police responded to a call at 1515 21st Street North regarding “several shots fired.”
Once on scene, investigators found bullet holes in several vehicles in and around the driveway. Several shell casings were also found.
The occupants of the home said they were asleep at the time of the shooting. Although no one was injured, a stray bullet did enter the home through the kitchen window.
A second shooting occurred on Friday Sept. 26 at approximately 5 p.m. Officers were called to an alleged shooting at 5th Street South and 15th Avenue South. While investigating the scene, the CPD received a call from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle saying a 24year-old male had been brought in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound.
The gunshot victim, Fred Butler, said he had been at a home at 5th Street South and 15th Avenue and he had gotten into a fight. He said the fighting escalated and someone started shooting.
The CPD received information that Jarvis Alexander, 22, of Columbus had been involved with the fight and he was later arrested and charged with two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling. He was released on a $20,000 bond.
A CPD spokesperson said Alexander, the son of former Columbus Police Officer Louis Alexander, had 31 incidents on his record where the police had to be called. Alexander has been arrested 10 times, including for felonious possession of a controlled substance and felonious aggravated assault, as well as two DUIs and several other offenses.
Alexander was also in a nearby home on the night of the Northside shootings. He was questioned by police at the time and stated he was “chillin’ in the house when the shooting started and everybody started running.”
The CPD spokesperson would not comment on whether the two shootings are related but did say that more arrests are probably likely.4
