Just before 9:30 pm Monday, Columbus police and medical responders rushed to 2206 8th Avenue South after a caller to E-911 reported that a man had been assaulted before having his throat cut. The caller also stated that the assailant fled the home in a green sedan with Monroe County plates.
As officers arrived on scene, they spotted a car that matched the vehicle description trying to leave the area. As police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver ran a stop sign before bailing from the car. As the unknown black male ran back along 8th Avenue South towards the scene of the crime, Officer Joseph Strevel followed closely in his patrol car.
Just outside the home where the alleged attack occured, Strevel (with the help of two unknown civilians) apprehended the runner.
Once in custody, the would-be escape artist was asked his name, to which he responded, “Demarco Elliot.” A quick record check showed that Demarco Elliot is currently incarcerated in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. The runner refused to give his
real name.
[Several members of the neighborhood attempted to identify the assailant, but most did not recognize him. It was agreed that he was not a local. After interviewing a couple dozen people, I found one bystander who could identify him as Camacho Elliot. JD]
The victim of the attack, Leon Lawrence, was able to walk to an ambulance under his own power, though he suffered a stab wound to the right side of his neck.
Elliot also required an ambulance to transport him to the hospital, saying that he had a blood clot in his lung and could not breathe.
The incident is still under investigation. After being treated at the hospital, Elliot was transported to the LCADC and charged with running a stop sign, no seatbelt, driving with a suspended license, no insurance, failure to obey a police officer, giving false information and DUI 2nd offense.
This was Elliot’s 23rd arrest since August 2000. His 22nd arrest was featured in the Packet in October 2013 when he fled from Columbus police after wrecking his car while driving under the influence.
