Lowndes County District 1 volunteers and sheriff’s deputies raced to the intersection of Dale Rd. and Shelton in Caledonia Sunday afternoon after a motorcyclist was injured after striking another vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Department reported that Austin Lumpkin was headed south on Dale Rd. on his 2006 Suzuki motorcycle around 5:20 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by a 2008 Chevy Cobalt that had just left the stop sign at Shelton Rd. The sedan, driven by Dylan Lien, was just pulling into the roadway when Lumpkin struck the rear quarter panel, destroying the rear windshield before becoming airborne and flying across the trunk of the car. Lumpkin reportedly flew about 12-15 feet before landing on the roadway.
Volunteers and paramedics from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle were on scene quickly and immediately tended to his wounds. He was brought to the hospital in good condition, complaining only of a moderate case of road rash. He was reportedly cited for not having a motorcycle endorsement. A passenger who was in the Cobalt reportedly saw the motorcycle seconds before the impact and warned Lien, but it was too late.
