A Columbus man was arrested for the 22nd time Saturday evening after he shoplifted from a Columbus WalMart, fled, and then fought with police when captured. Antonio Conner, 23, allegedly looted several items from the WalMart Supercenter at 1913 Highway 45 North before being spotted by security agents inside the store shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday. Conner reportedly ran out of the store when confronted and quickly fled east on nearby Lincoln Road before jutting south behind Kroger Plaza.
E-911 operators dispatched several officers to the area in search of a black male suspect dressed “like a female” with a long blonde ponytail. Officer David Hunt arrived seconds later and began to search the area behind Zaxby’s restaurant.
Hunt immediately saw Conner, dressed in red mid-drift top, leopard print leggings and a faux-leather black jacket walking in front of Pizza Hut in the southwest corner of Kroger Plaza. As Hunt approached the suspect, Conner darted into nearby Simply Fashion in an apparent attempt to hide. Hunt jumped out of his cruiser and captured Conner inside of the boutique and immediately called for backup. Conner put up a modest struggle as Hunt escorted him from the store, but began to violently kick and scream as they approached the waiting patrol car. Conner, with his hands behind his back in handcuffs, raised both legs repeatedly in an attempt to run from Hunt. With each outburst, Conner managed another attempt at escape.
“Get outta my face!” Conner screamed at Hunt, “I’m… telling… you…to..get…out…of…my…face!”
“Stop running, Antonio,” Hunt ordered, “or, I’m going to have to hold you down.”
After another another fit of kicking and screaming, Hunt brought Conner to the ground and placed a knee in his back. Hunt repeated his call for backup just as two other officers arrived to assist. Conner was placed into Hunt’s car briefly, but was removed about two minutes later when he began kicking the window over and over again. While Conner was being transferred to another patrol car, he saw a group of friends picking up an order from the Pizza Hut counter.
“Call my momma,” Conner screamed, “Call my momma, tell her I’m goin’ to jail. Tell her to come ‘n get me!”
An unidentified Walmart security agent arrived shortly after to identify Conner and the pile of pilfered merchandise, which was stored in a black purse(it was unclear if the purse itself was stolen from Walmart-CK.)
Inside the purse, police discovered: multiple pairs of flats (women’s shoes), one pair of Child of Mine brand children’s pajamas, a hair styling appliance, several unidentified items of clothing, two pump bottles of St. Ives lotion and two jars of generic petroleum jelly. Conner was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest, as well as an outstanding warrant for contempt of court . Conner has been arrested 22 times in Lowndes County since 2008, with multiple charges of shoplifting, simple assault and disorderly conduct. Conner turns 24 next week.
