A Caledonia man was arrested for driving under the influence after he led Columbus Police officers on a short car chase early Sunday morning. Officer Christian Benton noticed a black Chevy Silverado pickup truck driving erratically on 7th Street North around 4:45 a.m. near the intersection of Park Circle. When Benton pulled up to the truck, the driver -later identified as 26-year-old Kevin Stokes of Caledonia, allegedly threw a beer bottle at Benton’s patrol car, spun out his tires and pulled away from the officer.
Benton chased Stokes West down 18th Avenue North, then north on 6th Street North until briefly losing sight of the suspect when he turned east on Willowbrook Road. Just as Stokes appeared to be “home free,” officers responding to the area caught sight of him just as he turned north onto 7th Street by Joe Cook. By the time Stokes arrived at the new stoplight at Bluecutt Road by Heritage Academy, he was surrounded by patrol cars.
Stokes surrendered without incident and was taken into custody and charged with DUI (refusal to take test), reckless driving, and failure to yeild to blue lights. He was released on a $1,640 bond.
