A two car accident Sunday morning near Columbus Air Force Base sent two area men to the hospital. According to The Mississippi Highway Patrol, John Whitaker Jr. was headed northbound on Highway 45 when he slowed to take the left turn onto East Gate Road, headed towards Columbus Air Force Base(CAFB.) Whitaker told first responders on scene that he was following another driver through the turn and didn’t see a southbound 1995 Chevrolet S-10 until it was too late. Whitaker’s 2005 Dodge Stratus collided with the pickup, which was driven by Clay Madison, 58, of Caledonia, throwing the Chevy into a tailspin and launching the Stratus through a nearby stop sign.
Volunteers from Lowndes County District Two were quickly on scene and stabilized Madison until paramedics could transport him to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Madison told authorities he was wearing his seatbelt, although a starburst on his windshield did appear consistent with cranial impact. Whitaker was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but both men were reportedly released with moderate injuries later that evening.
