An Alabama woman who also resided in Columbus is dead after an accidental drowning at a Downtown Columbus motel on Thursday, August 1.
Amber Nicole “Nicky” Shelnut, 21 of Warrior, Ala., and Columbus, was pronounced dead by Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant at 8:31 p.m. at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Shelnut drowned in the pool at the Gilmer Inn on Main Street.
“The call came in shortly before seven,” Merchant said. “She died at the hospital at 8:31. An autopsy has been performed and a toxicology will be done. I have suspicion to believe drugs were a contributing factor in her death.”
Shelnut had a history of arrests including a 2012 DUI as well as public intoxication and possession of drug paraphernalia in Alabama. Shelnut had been released from the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center hours before her death. She had completed a sentence for two counts of contempt of court. She was arrested on warrants by CPD officer Lance Luckey.
According to an eyewitness, a Gilmer Inn employee allegedly saw Shelnut’s body at the bottom of the deep end of the pool. A third male helped the employees pull Shelnut’s body from the pool.
Shelnut was with an unidentified male who used a passport to check into the Gilmer. It is not know if he was present at the time of the drowning.
Columbus Fire Department first responders from Engine 21 worked on Shelnut until she was transported by ambulance to BMH.
“Although we are investigating this death, we have ruled out foul play,” said Columbus Police Chief Selvain McQueen.
Shelnut was born July 30, 1992, in Columbus  to Tommy and Tracie Shelnut. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Paul and Louise Shelnut, and her maternal grandmother, Allene Fields.
A memorial was held Monday in the funeral home chapel of Chandler Funeral Home with Wes Jones officiating.
Survivors include her daughter, Ryley Alexis Downs of Warrior, AL; her parents, Tommy and Tracie Shelnut of Warrior, AL; two sisters, Britney Cantrell of Warrior, AL and Lindsey Shelnut of Columbus, MS; one brother, Will Shelnut of Warrior, AL; her grandfather, Harlon Fields of Millport, AL; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Nicky Shelnut Memorial Fund, c/o Bank of Vernon, P.O. Box 309, Vernon, AL 35592. All donations will go Teen Challenge.
