The Packet / WCBI Kick Off EndZone Extra

Endzone LogoSpecial to The Packet

Friday nights at high school football fields in the Deep South are like almost nowhere else in the country … packed stadiums filled with screaming fans, young athletes playing for the pride of their school and neighborhood bragging rights, communities rallying around a fall tradition.
It’s almost high school football time in and around the Golden Triangle and this year, WCBI’s sports team and The Packet – your local news leaders – are bringing readers and viewers a new inside look at all the action on the weekly End Zone show every Friday night on WCBI and here in The Packet through End Zone Extra.
This year, the questions already are stacking up.
Can Heritage Academy repeat? Can Starkville High take last year’s 5A state title to the next level at 6A? Will Noxubee County repeat in 4A? Will West Point extend last year’s north-half appearance to a championship challenge? Will Columbus continue to improve behind quarterback Trace Lee? How is the rebuilding coming at New Hope and Caledonia? Is West Lowndes up to the challenge of stretching last year’s first-round playoff berth further into the playoffs? Has Aberdeen got what it takes to go deeper in the playoffs this year? Can Pickens County and Lamar County build on last year’s strong seasons in West Alabama?
Those and many others are just a few of the story lines we’ll be watching throughout the season every week in The Packet, every day on WCBI Sports and every Friday night on The End Zone on WCBI.
Not only will you get a look at schools in Lowndes, Clay, Oktibbeha, Monroe, Noxubee, Pickens and Lamar counties, but WCBI Sports and The End Zone take you to schools throughout 25 counties in Northeast Mississippi and West Alabama and how they match up.
We kick things off Aug. 20-22 with three 30-minute shows on WCBI each night at 6:30 p.m. We’ll have insight from area high school football analysts, hints on players to watch, highlights from last year, and preseason practices and picks for the coming season.
We kick off Tuesday night, Aug. 20 with a look at 1A and 2A. Wednesday, Aug. 21 we wade into 3A and 4A and Thursday, we tackle 5A and 6A.
Here are some teases to be thinking about.
West Point will be the team to beat in 5A. Starkville and Columbus will battle it out for the top spot in their 6A division. Oak Hill Academy will make some noise in the private school small division and Heritage and Starkville Academy will be a contenders again. Noxubee will be good but may have a tough time repeating in 4A.
Tune in Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on WCBI for The End Zone preview shows and check out The End Zone Extra in next week’s Packet for more previews and predictions on the first Friday night of high school football in the area.
And we love your comments and thoughts. Follow us at www.wcbi.com, on Twitter at  WCBI End Zone and on Facebook.
