A two-car collision claimed the life of a Columbus woman Sunday afternoon. According to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant, Constance Pilkington Johnson was pronounced dead at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle from injuries sustained in the accident.
Johnson, 89, was pronounced dead at 7:04 p.m.
The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 45 Alt. and Tarleton Road near Crawford. Johnson’s vehicle was struck almost head-on by another vehicle. No other injuries were reported.
The intersection has gotten the attention of some elected officials who hope to make the area more safe for motorists.
“It is a dangerous intersection, we’ve had two wrecks there in two weeks,” said District 4 Supervisor Jeff Smith. “I contacted (county engineer) Bob Calvert about getting in touch with MDOT to try and get a warning device. When I went out there (Tuesday night), both stop signs had red flashing lights installed. We’re working to try and improve the safety of this intersection.”0
