One man was shot in the buttocks and three others were injured after a wild shootout broke out in front of a popular local watering hole in Artesia Sunday night. Lowndes County Sheriff’s Deputies swarmed to Front Street in Artesia shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday night after multiple calls came in that several people had been shot during a gun battle outside of The Main Street Lounge. Deputies arrived within minutes of the call to find the area in the parking lot of the bar almost completely empty, except for at least twenty bullet casings and a bevy of beer bottles covering the grounds. It appeared that a large group had been gathered in the area for most of the evening and a fight had broken out shortly before 11 p.m. According to Lowndes County Chief Deputy Marc Miley, four victims arrived at area hospitals with various wounds, including one male that was shot in his buttocks, and others suffering other minor injuries- some possibly consistent with having been grazed by gunfire.
Witnesses told The Packet that local resident Richard Guy was assaulted as he tried to break up the fight and assist someone who had been wounded. Guy’s pickup truck was struck by at least two bullets before he managed to escape the scene and drive himself to Baptist Memorial Hospital- Golden Triangle. Guy was treated and released that night, and his mother told The Packet that he is doing fine.
According to law enforcement sources, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office has received little to no help from witnesses on scene, or from the victims. The same source noted that multiple guns were used in the shootout and that the victim that was hit in his posterior drove himself to Oktibbeha County Hospital that evening, was questioned by deputies and later released. Investigators are working on all leads and deputies have been on close patrol in the area near the bar every evening since.
