On the afternoon of Mon. July 22,, Maddie Brown was pulling into the parking lot of the US Post Office on Bluecutt road when her Honda Accord surged forward. The car plowed through a support column and rammed the front doors of the building, causing thousands of dollars in property damage. Brown later told officers that she had accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal as she pulled into a parking space.
Responding firefighters and paramedics worked for nearly half an hour to extricate Brown from the Honda, which was pinned underneath the remnants of the column that had been destroyed. The driver was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle with minor injuries.
Also injured in the wreck was Linda Stotts, who was exiting the building at the time of the crash. Stotts was just inside the front doors when the car hit, knocking her to the ground. Medical responders tended to her while their brothers-in-arms pulled Brown from the Accord. Stotts was secured to a stretcher and taken out the back door of the building to a waiting ambulance. She was also transported to BMH-GT for treatment of minor injuries.
A spokesperson for the Bluecutt Rd. Post Office commented that it is not uncommon for cars to hit the front of the building. She noted several that have occurred in recent years. It was mentioned on scene that the Post Office would do well to invest in concrete filled metal posts in front of each parking space that faces the building.
