Local Man Loses Life in Motorcycle Wreck

Jonathan Brown’s ’96 Harley

The blinding sunset Tuesday evening may have factored into a tragic accident that led to the death of a 46-year-old Starkville man. Mildred Smith, of Starkville, told authorities she was headed Eastbound on Highway 182(Frontage Rd.) when a Wesbound motorcycle swerved into her lane and struck the front driver’s side bumper if her 2006 Toyota Matrix around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. The Mississippi Highway Patrol said that 46-year-old Jonathan Brown, also of Starkville, was thrown from his 1996 Harley Davidson motorcycle and landed head first on the roadway just in front of the main entrance to the EMCC Mayhew campus. Although Brown was wearing his helmet, first responders on scene found him to be unresponsive as soon as they arrived suffering from what appeared to be a wound to his forehead . Lowndes County Deputies, Lowndes County District 5 Volunteers and Starkville Volunteers were on scene within seconds, but were unable to resuscitate Brown. Paramedics from BMH-GT arrived on scene just before 5 p.m. and performed CPR for nearly 10 minutes before Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant was called to the scene. Witnesses to the accident told the Packet on scene that Brown was a student at EMCC and that it seemed he did not see the Toyota coming towards him, likely because of the blinding sun that was setting in the Western sky. The Packet was unable to confirm that Brown was a student as of Wednesday night. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
