Local authorities swarmed to Cadence Bank in Columbus after a local man attempted had attempted to rob the branch early Friday afternoon. Jackie  Daniel Jennings (A.K.A. “JD”) reportedly walked into the main East entrance of Cadence Bank at 803 Main St. and calmly approached a teller and handed her a note. The note stated: “I have a bomb -Do Not Push Any Buttons- give me the money now nobody gets hurt.”
Sources close to the investigation told The Packet that Jennings then partially displayed a silver object halfway out of his pants pocket and then threatened her verbally, “It is a bomb, “give me your money! Do not make any sudden movements, and nobody will not get hurt – just do what I say.”
The teller then reportedly quickly placed an unreleased amount of money on her counter and then Jennings grabbed the cash and stuffed it into the crotch of his jeans. The bandit then slowly walked back out of the East exit and into the parking lot. Unbeknownst to Jennings, E-911 had received a holdup alarm from the bank within seconds of his exit and swarms of both police and Sheriff’s deputies converged on the area.
Jennings had made it to a parking lot annex just North of the bank and was walking towards a waiting vehicle when CPD officer Mark Underwood arrived on scene. Just as Jennings approached the 1998 Infiniti I30, Underwood and CPD Lieutenant Oscar Lewis cornered the suspect and held him at bay until Officer Brian Jenkins arrived to assist in the arrest. Within seconds of his capture,  over ten patrol cars from both Columbus Police and the Lowndes County Sheriffs were on scene.
Jennings, age 56, is well-known to local law enforcement, with at least ten arrests in the last 15 years- mostly for alcohol related crimes. Police questioned an unidentified passenger in the “getaway car”, but he was later released after it appeared he was unaware Jennings was attempting a bank robbery.  Although he was not identified by police, the car is registered to a Troy Shaw of Columbus. The unidentified passenger told officers he had let Jennings drive because he was “too drunk” to drive himself.
According to sources, JD Jennings has worked at Bates Tires in the past and has battled with alcohol abuse most of his adult life. He was in treatment at Willowbrook Mental Hospital(BMH Behavioral Health Center) just last week before he left on his own accord. The Packet source also said that he was in line to be housed at another local halfway house until his most recent relapse.
He is still in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center and his bond has been set at $35,000.
