Northside Columbus resident Noel Everett Sumrall, Jr, of 811 5th Ave North, recently entered a Guilty plea in Federal court in Aberdeen for one charge of Possession of Child Pornography. He had also been indicted on a count of Exploitation of a Child, but the latter charge was dismissed as part of a plea bargain agreement.
Sumrall, age 66, was originally arrested in December, 2011 after a police raid on his residence turned up at least seven large trunks filled with images of naked male and female children, ranging in age from four to seventeen; similar images of adults were also found at the location. The raid took place due, in part, to a tip from a concerned citizen. The majority of the items were reportedly those depicting young boys; a wide variety of media was seized, and authorities believe that he had been compiling the collection for several decades.
Local police apprehended Sumrall at the time of the raid and he was later indicted on the Federal charge in late August 2012. In September 2012, the FBI arrested him. After his initial arrest by Columbus Police, he was issued a $7,500 bond by Columbus Municipal Judge Nicole Clinkscales, which many locals felt was extraordinarily low for such a charge; the judge also required that he not have any contact with children to whom he was not related by blood, and that he was not likely to be a flight risk, due to his connections with the community.
Sumrall will face sentencing at a later date and sources tell the Packet he is likely wearing an ankle bracelet so authorities can monitor his whereabouts. The charge carries with it a maximum sentence of ten years in prison, which he will likely have to be served day-for-day, in addition to a $250,000 fine, and the requirement that he register as a Sex Offender upon release. [Sumrall, by all reports, was in frail condition before the arrest and it can be assumed that the prosecution reasonably considered the 10 years a life sentence for the elderly offender.- CK.] We previously published a report about this case in 2011, when Sumrall was first arrested.
