Tuesday, Dec. 11, Columbus Police Officers responded to a shoplifting call at Walmart regarding a black male that left the store on a bicycle, carrying a television. Employees told officers that they watched the man ride down Lincoln Road towards Hwy 45 N. until he disappeared into the Kroger parking lot.
Minutes later, Columbus Court Officer Grady Jaynes spotted the man on 18th Ave. N., just passing the Hwy. 82 overpass. While he was still on the bike, the television was no where to be found. Officers Christopher Smith and Christian Benton responded to the area, taking the man, identified as Carl Smith, into custody and returning the stolen Huffy to Walmart.
After being interrogated, Smith admitted to taking the items. He told the officers that he handed the television off to a friend in a car at Kroger. He agreed to show the where the loot was being kept.
Smith lead the officers to Chanticleer Apartments on Park Circle, to the home of a well known shoplifting repeat offender. After a lengthy search of the home, the television was not found.
Carl Smith was arrested and charged with Shoplifting less than $250. The case is still under investigation.
