Robert Lee Harris was arrested Tuesday night and charged with possession of marijuana.
Harris was driving northbound on Hwy. 45 around 11 p.m. Tuesday when he was pulled over by Mississippi Highway Patrolman Brad Edmondson in the parking lot of the former Bancorp South building.
When Edmonson approached the vehicle he noticed a strong scent of marijuana and immediately called for the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics to come to the scene. Local Metro Narcotics Agents Archie Williams and Don Richardson responded to the scene.
Once Harris was out of the vehicle, agents were able to see a gallon-size Ziploc bag of marijuana, still partially encased in a vacuum-sealed bag.
While explaining his story to the narcotics agents and police officers with the Columbus Police Department who had also arrived on scene, Harris told officers he was a diabetic and began to complain of chest pains. An ambulance was dispatched to the location, and, after EMTs checked his blood sugar, Harris was declared healthy.
Harris was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. He was transported to the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.0
