Shots rang out on Woolbright St. early Tuesday night and the three suspected shooters ran from the scene, leaving their victim bloody and wounded.
E-911 received numerous calls just after 7:30 p.m. reporting that shots had been fired. Callers told 911 dispatchers that three male subjects were running from the scene and heading east. They also reported that a maroon vehicle was involved. Witnesses on the scene identified the shooter as 17-year-old Jeremy Billups.
Officers surrounded Woolbright, which is located off of Airline Rd. next to Trinity Nursing Home, and blocked off both ends of Alabama St. However, they were unable to locate Billups or the other two young men.
While no one was shot at the home, an unidentified black male received a laceration to the left eye when he was hit with a revolver.
CPD Officer David Hunt arrived on scene and immediately requested an ambulance. He also radioed for the fire department because a car in front of the home was smoking.
Firefighters with the Columbus Fire Department arrived and quickly put out the smoke while EMTs tended to the victim. The young man initially refused treatment, but his mother was on scene and requested that he be taken to the hospital because he has a history of seizures.
The cause of the altercation remains unknown. Jeremy Billups was the only one of suspects who was identified.
While Billups’ record is not available because he is a minor, he appeared in court last month to testify against his former friend, Demonta Gardner. Billups and Gardner were two of five young men arrested for their roles in the Sep. 2011 armed robbery/burglary of Karen Winter.
Winter was inside her Sandpiper apartment on Sep. 20, 2011, when a group of young men, including Billups and Gardner, strong-armed their way inside. Once inside, the group forced Winter to lie on the floor and held a gun to her head while they stole money and electronics from her home.
Gardner was found guilty and sentenced to twenty years in prison.
As of press time Wednesday evening, no one had been arrested in relation to the shooting.0
