Multiple people contacted The Packet last week concerning a “dead body.” According to numerous Columbus residents, a dead body was found lying on the side of the road last Thursday. The location of the body varied from Seventh Ave to the corner of 19th and Main.
However, when The Packet called Coroner Greg Merchant to investigate, Merchant said that he, too, had heard the rumor but it was just that, a rumor. When Chief of Police Selvain McQueen was contacted, he also dispelled the rumor, saying, “There have been many rumors circulating all over Lowndes County about a dead body on the side of the road. There aren’t any. It’s just a rumor.”
While there have been several deaths in the past week, including two on Thursday, neither of the deceased was lying on the road. A man died Thursday afternoon when he fell out of a tree while cutting tree limb. He succumbed to his injuries at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Another man died Thursday evening while sitting in his car on the side of Sand Rd. but, according to Merchant, he died of natural causes.
