Myron Sewell was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, roughly 24 hours after he allegedly raped a woman at Double S Laundry in Columbus.
The victim of the attack told CPD officers that she was cornered by a man at the laundromat early Tuesday morning. She said the man first tried to rob her. After he was told that she had no money, the assailant instead forced her into a bathroom and raped her. After her assailant left the scene, the victim went to the BMH-GT emergency room, where she spoke with police.
Investigators reviewed security tapes from the laundromat and soon identified the attacker as Myron Sewell. A warrant was issued for Sewell’s arrest shortly after.
The CPD warrant team, Officers Kelvin Lee and Lance Luckey, attempted to serve the warrant at a Northside home Tuesday afternoon. Sewell slipped past them and led the team (along with several other officers that responded) on a footchase that covered several blocks. He was last seen in the area of Military Road and Schoolhouse Avenue before losing the officers.
Wednesday morning, the Columbus Police Department got word of Sewell’s location. According to Lowndes County Crime Stoppers Coordinator Terrie Songer, the tip came in on the Crime Stoppers hotline. The tip was passed on to CPD investigators. Just after 10:00 am, Columbus CID officers cornered Sewell at a home on Idlewild Road near Airline Manufacturing. He was taken into custody, fitted with leg shackles to prevent another chase and transported to the CID office for questioning. Sewell was charged with Burglary and Sexual Assault.
