Retired Columbus Police lieutenant John Pevey, his wife Pam, their 2 children and niece and nephew lost all of their belongs when their home was destroyed by a fire late Tuesday night. At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, The fire broke out at 184 Wenonah Drive off of Jess Lyons Road at approximately 9:30 p.m. after the family placed hot embers from the fireplace in the backyard. The embers were apparently still hot and created a grass fire which quickly grew out of hand and caught the home on fire. The fire traveled from the back of the home to the front, destroying the mobile home in minutes. The family escaped the blaze with only the clothes on their backs and is now homeless. The majority of their belongings were destroyed, but the family’s Bibles survived the blaze unscathed. District 2 firefighters and 4-County Electric crews responded to the scene. The massive blaze required two trucks and two tankers to extinguish the flames.
John said he is “grateful that everyone is OK” noting “It could have been a lot worse.” All of his personal effects from the CPD were destroyed in the fire as well with the exception of a framed Packet 941.
