Veteran Officer Suspended for Second Time

Columbus Police officer Robert Walker was suspended in a reported 6-0 vote in Monday night’s executive session of the city council meeting.
Walker, who has been with the force for four years, was suspended for two separate incidents that happened back in September. Walker was working warrant detail when he called in sick to work. That same evening, a fight broke out at the Trotter and CPD were dispatched to the scene. According to a fellow officer, Walker was working security at the event and wearing clothing emblazoned with the CPD logo.
Sources close to Walker deny the allegations and claim that while Walker was admittedly at the Trotter, he was not working the event nor was he wearing police issued clothing. Walker allegedly turned in a doctor’s excuse to his supervisor at the CPD the next day.
In a separate incident, Walker was still working warrant detail when he allegedly took his break at the East Columbus Substation. As part of a special detail, sources close to Walker claim that he did not have to sign out when taking a break. [When officers are working patrol they are given two breaks per shift, a long and a short. Officers have to notify dispatchers and sign out at a given location when they take their break. SF] Sources close to The Packet claim that a fellow officer was on regular patrol and noticed an empty patrol parked in front of the substation. The officer reportedly got out of his car and approached the vehicle. When the officer did so, they allegedly noticed a gun holster and a vest lying on the front seat of the unlocked car. The officer then went to the door of the substation, knocked and Walker answered. That same officer then notified his superior, who then notified Interim Chief Selvain McQueen.
However, sources close to Walker admit to a “spare” vest lying on the front seat but not the gun holster. Sources claim that Walker was wearing his gun belt, gun intact, and a vest. Those same sources feel his suspension is “not fair”, claiming that Walker was not doing anything wrong, claiming that he was meeting a social worker at the substation and they were “discussing a case.”
Walker will be on unpaid leave for 15 working days, or the equivalent of a month’s paycheck, effective immediately. Walker reportedly asked the Chief and City Council if the suspension could be placed on hold until after the holidays so he could buy his children Christmas presents, but his request was denied.
When questioned about the incident, McQueen declined to comment on the department’s personnel issues.
This is the second suspension for the officer. Walker was suspended back in May 2009 from an incident involving three other officers while on a training exercise to Vicksburg. Walker and the other officers each received 15 days of unpaid leave as well as a six month probationary period. 0

  1. With public safety at risk and somebody who can’t perform consitantly by the rules, it’s probably about time to send him packing!!! My opinion…….
