Officer Tases Mentally Ill Man After Family Calls 911

Brunson Gandy

According to Ethel Martin, her grandson, 27 year old Brunson Gandy allegedly attacked his uncle, Curly Martin. Ethel Martin says she called 911 after Gandy allegedly punched Curly Martin in the eye and ripped his shirt.
Officer Otis Billups arrived on scene and entered the residence, speaking with both Ethel and Curly Martin. While Billups was talking with the pair, Gandy left the room and began walking down the hallway towards his bedroom. Billups repeatedly ordered Gandy to stop but Gandy did not respond to the officer’s commands. That is when Billups discharged his Taser, not once but twice. Gandy was wearing a jacket and the prongs from the Taser did not make contact with Gandy during the first firing of the stun gun. When Gandy was unaffected by the initial tasing and continued towards his bedroom, Billups discharged the Taser again. After a brief scuffle, Billups took Gandy into custody.
Sgt Ross Richardson arrived on scene, and being familiar with Gandy, informed Billups that the subject was mentally ill and Lowndes County Adult Detention Center would not take him.
Ethel Martin began to plead with officers saying “He can’t read, he can’t write, he can’t even go the bathroom. Take him to Willowbrook. Please take him to Willowbrook.”
An ambulance was then dispatched to the residence and after confirming that Gandy did not sustain any injuries in the incident, released him into police custody.
After speaking with Assistant Chief Joe Johnson via telephone, Sgt. Richardson released Gandy into the care of his grandmother.
Saturday evening was not Gandy’s first run in with local law enforcement, in fact, CPD had been at the residence hours earlier
Gandy has a history of violent behavior and had checked himself out from Willowbrook on Friday. Gandy was admitted to the mental health facility after he attempted to assault Ethel Martin with a knife last week.

I really feel for this family but this young man needs to be in a secure facility before he kills someone. It seems to be so difficult nowadays to commit someone until it is too late.
