Edwards Resigns from Light and Water Board

Columbus Light and Water Chairman Jabari O. Edwards turned in a letter officially resigning from his position on the CL&W Board of Commissioners on Friday, effective at the end of the year.
Edwards had served on the board for 7.5 years, having started his term in May of 2004, he was chairman for the last 5.5 years.
“My time at the Light and Water Department has been a fulfilling experience for me. I got to work with some amazing individuals and together we were able to accomplish some things that will benefit the community for a long time,” he said. “In my time at the Light and Water Department, we were able to show financial strength and work to improve the infrastructure on the light and water side.”
He said he was especially proud of some efforts that were made to work with some non-profit organizations and help some senior citizens with their utility bills. Another effort undergone was an energy efficiency program which involved doing about $1 million in updates. According to Edwards, the program has already shown results.
“By addressing the human capital, financial, and infrastructural needs of CL&W, we have insured the continued viability and sustainability of this organization going forward into the future. I am also delighted that in an attempt to assist our rate payers, both residential and commercial, we have created an energy efficiency program and the model for our program is now being used by TVA and inquired about by utilities and trade magazines in other states,” he said in his resignation letter.
Edwards says he is resigning to work on his own projects. “I’m 38 now and it is time for me to focus 100 percent on my personal endeavors. I need to let a new group of younger leaders take over,” he said. “I have no doubt that replacing me will be an easy task, because Columbus is full of young talented individuals who are waiting for, and deserve an opportunity to play a part in the governing process.”
Edwards said that he had already made up his mind to not seek re-election when his term was up in two years and that he thought CL&W was in a good place, so it was time for him to pursue other business interests.
The 38-year-old owner of The Bridge Group insurance firm, was involved in Mayor Robert Smith’s campaign, but says he isn’t quite ready to jump into politics himself.
“I’ll never say never, but I do have some personal goals that I want to accomplish before I throw my hat into the political ring,” he said. “Though I may not be serving on the board, I will still be active and involved in the community.”
