Just before 5:30 pm last Friday evening, DICE Officer Steven Kemp pulled over a green Chevy pickup truck in Winner’s Quick Stop parking lot on the corner of 7th Street North and Military Road.
Officer Kemp approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and noticed passenger Rodel Hairston place a cigarette in his mouth. As Hairston attempted to light the cigarette, Kemp noticed a bulge on the side of Hairston’s mouth. The officer walked around to the passenger side of the vehicle and shone his flashlight in Hairston’s mouth.
Kemp then noticed two bags of what appeared to be a white powdery substance in the subject’s mouth. The officer asked Hairston what was in the bags but instead of answering him, Hairston began trying to swallow the cellophane wrapped substance.
Officer Kemp immediately grabbed Hairston’s jaw in an effort to stop him from swallowing the bags. Once the officer grabbed the subject, Hairston grabbed Kemp’s hand and began fighting the officer. Kemp radioed for backup, yelling over his radio “He’s fighting me, he’s trying to swallow it!”
Kemp then hit Hairston in the sternum, a skillfully practiced move taught in the police academy. The subject then coughed up the bags of cellophane but not before biting the officer on the hand.
Officers William Thrasher, Lovent Gaines, Bo Pearson and Oscar Lewis arrived on scene to assist Officer Kemp and Hairston was placed in handcuffs. The subject then began yelling at officers saying “I ain’t no fool! I’ve been to prison! You ain’t gone find sh*t! I ain’t no fool!”
Officer Kemp performed a field test on the two bags of white substance and both tested positive for cocaine. Both bags totaled an estimated eight ball of cocaine.
An ambulance was called to tend to Hairston in case he had injured himself while attempting to swallow the coke but he refused treatment on scene.
Hairston was then placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance.
