Late Speeding Ticket Leads To Drug Bust

Nearly 10 oz of weed was recovered at the northside home

Northside Columbus -
Columbus Police Officers Lance Luckey and Kelvin Lee were serving a simple warrant for a late traffic fine yesterday afternoon when the aroma of marijuana smoke led to the discovery of nearly 10 ounces of weed at a small Northside home. The officers arrived at 1102 9th Avenue North shortly before 3:00pm Wednesday afternoon to serve an arrest warrant for Shawn Young. (Mr. Young had reportedly not paid an overdue fine for a speeding ticket-CK).
When Young opened the carport door of the home, a strong odor of marijuana swept towards the officers, and they asked for permission to search the home. An unidentified female inside the home initially denied the officers entry, so officers called the Lowndes County Metro-Narcotics Task Force to obtain a warrant to search the home for contraband. Shawn Young stayed inside the home as the warrant was obtained while a unidentified younger male was handcuffed and brought outside.

Metro Narcotics agents questioned the younger man outside until the warrant was delivered by Metro Narcotics Sergeant John Duke around 3:20pm. Agents Don Richardson and Archie Williams entered the home and immediately found a small bag of marijuana laying on a dresser just inside the carport door of the home. They searched the entire dresser and discovered some smoking paraphernalia, two scales and a much larger bag in the lower drawers.

Just as the drug stash was being placed into evidence bags, two young black males -later identified by Columbus Police as Marcus Rhone and Xzavier Morris- approached the officers under the carport claiming responsibility for the weed.

“That’s ours. That weed is ours. They didn’t do nothing. It’s ours” Morris told Narcotics agents.
The young man in handcuffs turned around with a surprised look on his face, but did not utter a word in dispute. The agents immediately handcuffed Morris and Rhone and had them sit on the edge of the carport facing while officers brought the marijuana outside to be weighed and processed into evidence.

As agent Williams tallied the total from the drugs, an officer asked the men one more time if the weed belonged to them.
“Yea. That’s ours” Morris repeated.
“All 10 ounces?” asked one of the agents.
Morris and Rhone quickly snapped their heads around to see the sizable cache of cannabis before dropping their heads in dismay. Both men continued to accept responsibility for the drugs, even after the implications were thoroughly explained to them. Both were charged with Felony Possession of Marijuana and brought to prison, while Shawn Young was taken into custody for his overdue speeding ticket.
