Early Sunday morning, just after midnight, CPD Officer James Hanson was patrolling in East Columbus when he happened upon two black males in dark clothes walking on McCrary Road near Airline Road. When he turned the corner onto McCrary, the two men (who were wearing identical clothes) split up and went to opposite sides of the street. So, Hanson stopped to talk to the suspicious characters.
Once out of the car, Hanson told both men to put their hands on the hood of his car. Both hesitated and looked as though they were going to run, so Hanson drew his Taser. Convinced, the two walked over to the car and placed their hands on the hood. While they were questioned, one of the men (later identified as Kevin Walker) acted nervous.
Hanson asked the men if they had anything illegal on them. They both answered no. When asked about any weapons, both men hesitated before one, Larvoris Fisher, admitted that he did have a gun. At this point, Officer Thomas Culpepper arrived on scene to assist.
Hanson put Fisher in handcuffs, and removed the gun and ammo from the man’s waistband and pocket. Culpepper moved to do the same with Walker.
When the officer got close, Walker made a mad dash down Airline Road. Culpepper followed, chasing Walker into a neighboring backyard. In the yard, Walker lost his footing and fell down, dropping his cell phone, hat and a revolver. Culpepper warned Walker to stop running. When the order was ignored, Culpepper drew and fired his Taser. The shot was ineffective due to the fleeing man’s baggy clothes.
Walker then jumped a barbed wire fence and made his escape while additional officers scoured the area.
Culpepper went back and gathered the dropped items, bringing them to Hanson’s patrol car on MCCrary. The revolver, a Rossi .357 loaded with filed down hollow points, had been tampered with. A poor attempt had been made to remove the serial number. Fisher’s gun, a Hi-Point .40 caliber with five rounds in the magazine, was also taken into evidence.
Larvoris Fisher was arrested and charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon Without a Permit. Kevin Walker is not yet in custody.[When asked, Fisher claimed an affiliation with the Gangster Disciples. – JD] 0
