Coming Soon! An influx of businesses flooding the Columbus market

Columbus has become widely known for it’s ability to draw industrial giants to the every expanding Industrial Park just west of town. What Columbus has never been known for however, is it’s restaurant selection. That’s all about to change.
By the end of 2011, Columbus will have added four new restaurants to the list of popular eateries with a fifth coming in the second week of January. Zaxby’s and Logan’s Roadhouse opened earlier this year and the glow of the neon sign from Chick-Fil-A, Bojangles and Umi’s will soon help illuminate the Highway 45 strip.
Chick-Fil-A is being constructed on the corner of 18th Avenue and Fifth Street North and has an estimated opening date of January 12, 2012. Construction began on the 4,500 square foot building three weeks ago and is on the site of what used to be Caney Fork restaurant. The fast food chain that is known for its “Eat Mor Chikin” ad campaign boasts seating for 138 people inside with an outside patio that will seat up to 20. Field superintendent Bill Chesnut says the concrete slab will be poured today with the framing for the building going up next week.
Bojangles will be taking up space in the old Taco Bell building on Hwy 45 in front of Leigh Mall. Lance Conn of Conn Construction says the rehab is an extensive job and should be finished by the end of the year. They are using the existing building but removing exterior walls and expanding the square footage, making the building a total of 2,200 square feet. Demolition began on the project two weeks ago and the framework of the building should go up as early as next week.
Popular Japanese Steakhouse Umi’s announced it’s arrival in Columbus back in June and is slated to nestle in the Windchase Plaza shopping center between It’s Metro Fashion and Ashley Furniture. The space for the restaurant can not be seen by merely looking at the building because a doorway has yet to be created. Construction is set to begin in the coming weeks and will be spearheaded by Castle Properties.
In addition to the restaurants, PetSmart, Dollar General and a new branch office for Bancorp South will be opening by year’s end.
Kenny Weigel, the building inspector for the City of Columbus conducted the final inspection on the PetSmart building on Wednesday afternoon. He expects to issue a certificate of operation as soon as the fire department finalizes their inspection. The pet supply store is set to open on the 24th of this month.
Bancorp South will be moving their main office branch from the corner of Main Street to Highway 45, next to Premier Ford and across from Gary’s Pawn and Gun. They are scheduled to open in early December. The banking powerhouse recently closed a reported 23 branches in six states.
A new Dollar General will be located at 1032 Highway 69 and is scheduled to open by the end of the year. Located out of Goodswill, TN, this will be Dollar General’s eighth store in Columbus. 0
