Fuqua Arrest

Just after 9:00 pm Saturday night, Officer Sherman Mosely spotted a 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis driving recklessly in the area of Fuqua’s Grocery on 11th Street south. He followed the car as it headed toward Downtown and pulled it over at the intersection of 10th Street and 4th Avenue South. The driver, Bianca Morris-Johnson, 23, was ticketed for No License. While Mosely spoke with Morris-Johnson, the rear passenger, Kenneth Jones, 46, tried to get out of the car. He was repeatedly instructed by Mosely to stay in the car. Finally, Jones jumped out of the car and started running east on 4th Avenue. Mosely gave chase and caught up with Jones when the runner lost his footing about 35 yards down the street. The pursuing officer pounced on the man and wrestled to get a set of handcuffs on him.
Jones finally gave up and said that he wouldn’t fight anymore. Mosely allowed the man to get to his feet so that he could be cuffed. Once standing, Jones started backing away from the officer before turning and attempting to run again. His flight was cut short when Mosely pulled his Taser and shot the would-be escapee in the back. After the initial five second ride, Jones tried to get up and run again. He was warned to stop, but ignored the command. For this, he received a second burst from the Taser. A third escape attempt earned a third shock.
Officer David Hunt arrived to assist Mosely. Jones was restrained and brought back to the intersection where the Mercury sat. While walking back to the car, Jones claimed he was tazed too long. He claimed that Mosely had tazed him “for, like, ten minutes”. He also said, “He kicked me in the face too! I wasn’t fighting. What’s a little guy like me gonna do to a big guy like him?” An ambulance was called to remove the Taser leads from Jones’ back. After being treated, Jones was charged with Public Drunk, Failure to Obey an Officer and Resisting Arrest. He was also served with a warrant from the Columbus Police Department.
Morris-Johnson consented to a search of the vehicle. A crack pipe next to the front passenger seat where a second passenger, Theodis Rhone, Sr., 46, was sitting. A check was run on Rhone and it was found that he too had a warrant. The warrant was served and he was charged with Possession of Paraphernalia.
Both men were transported to LCADC and Morris-Jackson was allowed to leave.
