The New Hope High School Varsity slow-pitch softball team won their 5th MHSAA 5A State title this week. This marks the 14th overall State Title for the powerhouse program led by coach Tabitha Beard. The Lady Trojans defeated the Picayune Lady Tide for the second straight year in a two game sweep, 7-6 and 15-4.
Head Coach Tabitha Beard says they couldn’t have done it without the support of the fans. “The fans were really great that day. (The first game) They made up their own cheers and really pushed the girls. We went into that second game with a lot of momentum and the girls stayed pumped up.”
The second game was won by a run rule and Beard says she has never experienced that in a state championship game. “The girls made the commitment they were going to hit the ball better. To go into extra innings in game one and then win by run rule, I’ve never seen it happen.”
This is the 5th State Championship win in a row for the Lady Trojans, and their 11th championship victory since 2000. It is the 14th title for the school overall.
The girls ordered their State Champs rings yesterday and Beard says “They’re on cloud nine. Seeing that camaraderie between the girls…it’s amazing.”
