District 39 State Representative Jeff Smith is the leading candidate for Mississippi House Speaker according to a poll being taken by the respected Mississippi poitical website Magnolia Report (www.magnoliareport.com).
The unscientific poll has been up for a few weeks asking voters to choose between 6 potential Speaker candidates. Current longtime House Speaker Billy McCoy did not seek re-election to his seat and therefore is retiring.
The 6 candidates listed by the website are Smith, Rep. Phillip Gunn, Rep. Herb Frierson, Rep. Sidney Bondurant, Rep. Mark Formby and Rep. Mark Baker. Smith’s vote totals have been running 68-71%, which is more than twice as much as all 5 of his challengers combined. Even though the poll is unscientific, that’s still a stunning vote count from a very well respected and reliable Mississippi political website.
As many Packet readers may recall, Smith lost the Speaker race to McCoy 4 years ago by a single vote.
Recently, District 17 State Senator Terry Brown told the Lowndes County Republican Women that he was hoping that the House would elect a Republican Speaker, though he didn’t mention his fellow Lowndes County legislator by name. It would be nice if our area legislators stuck together when it comes to electing one of our own to the next powerful Speaker position. That, alone, should not be the reason…but it’s long been widely believed that Rep. Smith would make a very good Speaker. His memory is incredible. His communication skills are impeccable. His experience in dealing with tough legislation is hard to match!
Corky Smith Passes
Speaking of Representative Jeff Smith…his son, Corky, recently passed the Bar exam. On his Smith ForSpeaker Facebook page, the proud father said of his son, “Corky got Sworn-In to the Mississippi Bar, The Supreme Court, The Federal Courts. And took the Oath of Office as an attorney…and lightning did not strike the building in Jackson nor did any of the Judges drop their gavels…wonders never cease!”
Roger Larsen Has
Speaking of Facebook, District 5 Supervisor independent candidate Roger Larsen now has his own page. It can be found at www.facebook.com/VoteRogerLarsen .
