Keith and Margie: A Columbus Musical Treasure!

The infamous Keith and Margie Brown performing at The Columbus Riverwalk

Keith & Margie Brown have become a musical household name around the Golden Triangle over the past 20+ years. They’re here, they’re there…they’re everywhere! And they have become the most recognized duo on the local music scene.
Recently, Keith shared some thoughts with me on his and Margie’s musical career. Their’s is quite a story.
“Since we’ve been together, Margie and I have always sat around the house singing familiar R&B and pop songs,” said Keith. “While listening to Mix 106.1 we heard a spot for the Master Host Inn. They were promoting live entertainment from Wednesday to Saturday, so we went by and talked to Beatrice Wolfe (gen: mgr:) and the rest, as they say, is history.”
The Master Host Inn that Keith speaks of is the hotel across from old Magnolia Bowl on 45. The lounge featured live entertainment for years.
“After awhile we started getting bookings all over,” Keith said.
I asked Keith about his and Margie’s musical influences growing up.
“Margie and I are basically an R&B act.. BUT our taste’s in music goes all over the place. Margie was influenced by the Supremes as a child, and me the Beatles. As we grew older, Margie got into Al Green, Aretha , and Phoebe Snow. Now she’s a big fan of Maxwell, De’Angelo, Anthony Hamilton, Adele, Angela Winbush, and Nora Jones. Myself, I was heavily influenced by the Isley Brothers. Others were Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Con funk Shun, Curtis Mayfield, to name a few. My guitar influences were Ernie Isley, Larry Carlton, Eric Gale and some cat named Jimi…”
“As a performer I’ve been playing about 35 years (WHOOOOAAA!!!!!). Throughout that time, I have had the privilege of performing on the same bill with some of biggest names in the biz.(Thats a whole ‘nuther story).”
“A couple of years ago Margie and I opened for Howard Hewitt, former lead singer for Shalamar. Anyway, Mr. Hewitt, not knowing that Margie was married, tried to woo her with his song “Once, Twice, Three Times”. Everybody was looking at me like “what you gone do Keith????”
“We all had a good laugh about it afterwards. Howard was a real cool guy. He took pictures with us and encouraged us.”
Keith talked about how much enjoyment he and Margie get out of performing and watching the crowd enjoy themselves. “Margie and I play classic soul, funk, blues and pop. I dont like the term “old school” (which is a hip hop term for old music). The music we play is timeless. If you dont believe me , watch a 5 year old when we sing “MY GIRL'”. They sing it too. We like to get audience participation!”
Keith asks Packet readers, “How many of you have “shook it down” with us??? Also, if there are musicians and singers in the crowd we welcome them to come and sit in. Contrary to what some think. We DONT get our music from outside sources. All the music you hear was played and recorded by me at home. The only thing programmed were the drums. All keyboards and bass guitar, were recorded in real time, mixed and burned to cd. I feel very blessed and fortunate to be doing what I love with the one I love. Hopefully thats part of our appeal.”
“Margie has a very distinctive ,soulful voice and it comes from a very real place, ” Keith added.
In closing, Keith appeals to the masses, “We want to continue to bring feel good music to the GTA and (dare i say) The WORLD!!!!. If you want to spend an evening, dancing, and reminiscing with good music, food, and friends, give us a call at 662-329-4423. You can inbox or friend us on facebook. Our page is under “MARGIE BROWN”.
