Columbus Man Found Dead in Backyard

"Booman's" residence where he died Friday morning.

Lucious “Booman” Wilson was discovered by a neighbor just after 8 a.m.
Gene Elem lived across the street from Wilson and says she heard a woman screaming “Booman’s dead! Booman’s dead!
Elem says that a crowd gathered within minutes of the 2nd Street South home and all were stunned with shock. “I just can’t believe he’s dead. I saw him just last night, sittin’ on that porch. I can’t believe he’s dead.”
Jimmy Sherrod, Wilson’s nephew, said the family was surprised to learn that Booman was home. “We all thought he was still up in Meridian.”
Booman had been in Meridian the week before as a patient at Whitfield Mental Hospital. Elem says she saw him come home though early Monday evening but he had been keeping to himself since his brother died. “They lived in that house together but when he died last month, we didn’t really see Booman anymore.”
Wilson had a history of mental illness and was known around town for his erratic behavior. Most locals remember him as the elderly man who would walk around the streets of downtown Columbus in a white sailor suit.
Elem said she was “constantly calling police to come take care of him.” “He would stand on my porch and throw beer bottles at my house, breaking glass and leaving it all in my driveway and in the street. I would call up the police and say ‘Booman’s at it again!’ ” Even still, Elem says she will miss her neighbor. “I’m gone miss him, you know? I’m gone miss him.”
Carter’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Funeral Service will be held Saturday at 11 am at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
