Local Restauranteur Saves the Day —– Bandit Bites Off More Than He Can Chew

A still-sweating Jeremy Shanklin is taken into custody after his attempt at a snatch and run.

A footchase followed a snatch-and-run crime on Idlewild Road Saturday, just before dusk. Around 7:00 pm, Amarisa Johnson was sitting in her car at Idlewild Rd and McHall Drive with a coworker she called “Carl”. While they sat at the stop sign, a black male walked up to the driver’s side window of the car. The male, later identified as Packet All-Star Jeremy Jamal Shanklin, reached through the window and leaned over like he was going to hand “Carl” a piece of paper. When his hand was sufficiently inside the vehicle, Johnson said Shanklin grabbed her wallet from the center console and started running away. At this point, “Carl” got out of the car, jumped into another vehicle and left the scene.
Johnson pursued the sticky-fingered bandit with her car, chasing him up Idlewild, honking and yelling, until he jumped a fence into a back yard near Airline Rd. Johnson pulled over onto Airline as she saw Shanklin crossing the parking lot of the Jumbo’s SOCO station on the corner. Shanklin had several people chasing him at this point.

Tyroid Weston was in the kitchen of his restaurant, GI Hot Wings (which shares a building with Jumbo’s) when he heard a commotion outside. When he was told that some guy had stolen a woman’s purse. Tyroid left the restaurant running and pursued Shanklin into the residential neighborhoods on the south side of Airline Rd. with several others following along.
After a short chase, Weston overtook Shanklin in the back yard of 264 McHall Dr. The good samaritan brought the bandit to the ground and held him there until police could arrive to arrest the criminal.

Jeremy Shanklin was taken into custody and charged with Petit Larceny and Disobeying an Officer and was also served with an outstanding warrant that he had garnered for Contempt of Court. A gun was found on the ground near where Shanklin was detained. The International Arms Cobra was taken into evidence, though Shanklin will not be charged with its possession until it has been fingerprinted and proven to be his.
Shanklin, 19, is no stranger to the Columbus Police Department. He has a long history of armed robberies, burglaries, and petit larcenies. [Additionaly shanklin has graced the cover of the Packet on occasion. These repeat arrests (and photos) have gained him the label as one of our “Packet All-Stars”. – JD] —–
Tyroid Weston wanted to special recognition for his part in the arrest, saying, “I just wanted to make sure they got the right guy.” We at The Packet would like to thank Weston for his selfless act. It’s not often that we get to highlight the acts of non-police members of the community when it comes to keeping the neighborhoods of Columbus safe.
It just so happens, we have a story on Tyroid Weston’s GI Hot Wings on Page 14 of this very issue.

  1. I haven’t been there but I will certainly be going and give him my business. He deserves it for getting involved when most people wouldn’t have.
