CVB Special Meeting

A special called meeting of the Columbus CVB board was held at the new CVB office behind the Tennessee Williams Welcome Center last Thursday evening. The meeting was called at the behest of boardmembers Whirllie Bryd and Bernard Buckhalter (and also local attorney David Owen).
As soon as the meeting began, the CVB board immediately went into closed determination to determine whether it needed to go into executive session. Board President George Swales said, “The purpose of this meeting was one…purpose to review a request that has been brought to the board…the nature and character of which would require us to enter into executive session.”
“I entertain a motion for closed consideration for executive session.”
The board then went into closed determination. And later (as expected) into executive session.
The executive session lasted about 35-40 minutes.
(The CVB board was discussing a request from Attorney Owen about several things that has been going on lately involving the board, including the recent firing of Adele Elliott, who was a receptionist and reportedly fired by Executive Director Nancy Carpenter for allegedly posting notices on the CVB Facebook page that included appeals for Facebookers to help support former Columbus Police Chief Joseph St. John. RW)
After the board ended its executive session, the media was called back into the room. Board member Dewitt Hicks (who is an attorney but not THE CVB attorney. RW) said, “The reason of the executive session by the CVB board was to authorize the executive committee to select an attorney from the approved attorney list from our liability carriers and to inform the board and anyone else of who that attorney is…and to cooperate fully with the attorney and take all appropriate steps recommended by the attorney, in order to cooperate fully and totally with the liability carrier in connection with this request……is that ok? (Hicks asked the board. RW).
The board then ended its special meeting.
