Officers responded to the corner of 7th Avenue and 14th Street North early Saturday morning around 9:30 when a woman called E-911 and told dispatchers that her son was unconscious and had been “jumped.” When CPD Officers Wade Beard and Josh Vandiver arrived on scene they found 25 year old Frankie Demontreal Petty lying on the sidewalk unconscious. Petty came to and then tried to fight the crowd before being calmed down by his mother and emergency personnel.
Petty’s mother, Brenda Petty, claims that she saw Alonzo Smith and Burt Sparks fighting with her son in the street. Petty then claims Sparks hit her son, knocking him to the ground before Smith and Sparks began kicking her son. Petty says she then threw her body on top of her son to protect him when the two alledged attackers began hitting her as well before fleeing the scene. Petty was transported by ambulance to BHM-GT where x-rays showed he had a broken jaw.
Later in the evening, Officer Rick Jones spoke with Smith and Anthony Billips regarding the incident. Smith claims Frankie Petty came out into the street in front of Smith’s car. Smith then claims Frankie Petty hit him first. Smith also denies his brother being involved in the incident.
