City, county schools’ test scores released

The Mississippi Department of Education released the results of the 2010-2011 standardized testing last week.

Students in grades three through eight are tested using the Mississippi Curriculum Test, Version Two, or MCT2, which tests mathematics and language arts skills. High school students take the Subject Area Test: Algebra I, US History, Biology I and English II. There was no Biology I component this year.

The Lowndes County School District

As a district, the LCSD met or exceeded the state average in all levels on the MCT2, an increase over last year where they met or exceeded the state mean score in 11 of 12 categories.

On a school by school basis:

  • Caledonia Elementary School exceeded state mean scores in all areas.
  • Caledonia Middle School exceeded state mean scores in all areas.
  • New Hope Elementary School exceeded the state mean scores in third- and fifth-grade language arts and in third- and fifth-grade math.
  • New Hope Middle School exceeded the state mean scores in sixth- and eighth-grade language arts and in eighth-grade math.
  • West Lowndes Elementary School exceeded the state mean scores in third- and fourth-grade language arts and in third- and fourth-grade math. They tied the state mean score in fifth-grade math.
  • West Lowndes Middle School exceeded state mean scores in seventh-grade math.

The LCSD lagged behind the state averages in all areas of the Subject Area Test, a performance that was unchanged from last year. School by school:

  • Caledonia High School exceeded the state mean scores in US History.
  • New Hope High School did not exceed state mean scores in any category.
  • West Lowndes High School did not exceed the state mean scores in any category.

The Columbus Municipal School District

As a district, the CMSD did not meet or exceed state averages in any level on the MCT2. This is slightly worse than last year, when the CMSD exceeded the state in two areas. However, it was a very close shave in several areas: the CMSD scored 149.3 in fourth-grade language arts versus a state average of 149.6; in seventh-grade language arts they scored 149.0 compared to the state average of 149.9. In fourth-grade mathematics the CMSD scored 151.5 compared to a state mean of 151.7.

On a school-by-school basis:

  • Columbus Middle School did not meet or exceed state scores in any area.
  • Cook Elementary School did not meet or exceed state scores in any area.
  • Fairview Elementary School exceeded the state mean scores in fourth-grade language arts and tied the state average in fifth-grade language arts and fourth- and fifth-grade mathematics.
  • Franklin Academy did not meet or exceed state scores in any area.
  • Sale Elementary School exceeded the state scores in all areas.
  • Stokes-Beard Elementary School exceeded the state average in fourth-grade math.

Columbus High School did not meet or exceed the state average in any category on the SATP.

And this is why my child DOES NOT go to public school!!! However, I will congratulate Caledonia for their scores and if I lived in the Caledonia school district, my child would probably attend there! This is embarrassing. People dont get mad when movies make fun of stupid southerners. We are unfortunately proving them right!!
