7-year-old bicycle wreck victim to have funeral on Saturday

Malik Wallace

At about 5:30 p.m., on Monday afternoon, seven-year old Malik Wallace died tragically when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle near his home on E. Cherry St. in East Columbus.
No citations were issued for the female driver of the small SUV that hit Wallace, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol has yet to release the name of the driver.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said that there was evidence that the driver attempted to swerve to avoid hitting the boy. Wallace’s bike apparently did not have brakes, Merchant said he tried to put his feet down to stop from entering the Highway, but could not.
Wallace, who would have turned eight on Sept. 1, was an entering first grader at New Hope Elementary School. He loved baseball and had recently played for the Pirates as catcher, pitcher, and outfielder. “He played baseball for the first time this summer. He was really good. He loved playing any of the positions and was a good little hitter.”
“Every time he would hit the ball, he would come up to me and say ‘I hit that ball hard, didn’t I Mom?’ and I’d say ‘Yeah, you did.’”
His favorite toy was a slap bracelet with his favorite wresler’s catch phrase (“You can’t see me.”) on it that his soon-to-be step-father, Jamie Williams, bought him at Wal-Mart. “Everytime his sister would even touch that thing he’d yell ‘Mama! tell her to give me back my slap bracelet!’”
“(Jamie) considered Malik to be his son,” said Horton.
Malik was fascinated with counting and numbers and loved coins. His mother said he didn’t like reading and had had a speech problem for a long time.
“He was really good, I mean really really good at basketball,” said his mother. “He could take a flat basketball, bounce it and shoot it and get it in. He could shoot anything and get it in that basket.”
Malik leaves behind a four-year old little sister, Mya, half-siblings Jabrielle, Noah, and Shamarra Wallace, soon-to-be step-sister, Anna, and grandfathers Gary Horton and Sammy Wallace.
Services are currently set for Saturday at All Nations Ministries on Hwy 69 at 2 p.m. Visitation is Friday at 1 p.m. At Lee-Sykes Funeral Home in Columbus. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.
“At least I got to know him for a little while,” said Horton with tears in her eyes. “He was a really good boy.”

Thoughts and prayers for Malik’s family and also for the woman who hit him. Obviously, it was an accident and she will probably suffer immensely from this terrible experience. It could have happened to anyone.
