Nearly 100 cyclists of all ages participated in a cycling awareness ride last Saturday morning in Starkville. Cyclists including Lynn Lewis, Kim Richardson and Meg Henderson of Starkville were among those who gathered at Board town Bikes at 7 am for an educational presentation, followed by the three mile ride through Starkville.
The riders were escorted by Starkville Police Officers, including one bike-mounted officers.
Two months ago Jan Morgan, owner of Board town Bikes, was seriously injured when she was hit by a car while cycling with a friend in Clay County. Morgan spent six weeks in a medically induced coma at NMMC-Tupelo while spinal injuries healed. Friends of Morgan’s said at Saturday’s ride that she is now alert and has movement in her arms and legs. She will go extensive therapy in Atlanta.
In the photo, Lewis and Henderson are wearing t-shirts that say motorists must give cyclists at least three feet of berth when passing. For their part, cyclists are required to stay as near to the shoulder of the road “as practicable”.
