Welcome to Lowndes County!

Columbus police officers responded to Zachary’s in Downtown Columbus just before 1:00 am Sunday morning in reference to an assualt.  Steven Turner and Katherine Norris called 911, saying that a white male they did not know walked up to their table inside the restaurant and swung at them, hitting Norris in the hand and Turner in the nose.  After the assault, the attacker, identified later as Daniel Rainey (25), went outside to sit in the limo he arrived in. [He and several of his friends were picked up in West Point at Anthony’s, where the friends work, by Leo’s Luxury Limos.  Rainey’s companions left him at Zachary’s and went to the Princess Theater.  It’s unclear if they left on foot before or after the assault. – JD]

Cpl. Donnie Elkin arrived on scene and was told by witnesses that Rainey was sitting in the limo.  When he opened the car door, Rainey was nowhere to be found.  [As I was pulling onto the scene, a man walked past my car and towards the courthouse.  After hearing the description of Rainey – shaggy hair, very drunk – I pointed the officers after him. – JD]

D.I.C.E. Officers Stephen Kemp and William Thrasher walked around the courthouse while Elkin drove his patrol car around the block.  Rainey was found at the corner of 6th St and 3rd Ave, hiding beside a house, behind a bush.  He resisted the officers at first, staying on all fours on the ground, but he was shortly placed in the back seat of Elkin’s car and transported back to Zachary’s before being taken to LCADC.

Some highlights from his questioning:

CPD: “Why were you hiding in the bushes?”

“In my day, that’s what you did.”

CPD: “What’d you hit those two people for?”

“That’s how we do things in West Point.  You meet up with somebody in the creek. If you got a problem with ‘em, you whoop their a**.”

CPD: “Well, that’s not how we do things in Columbus.”

“I see that!”

  1. Surely the judge will see that monetary restitution will not wake this cat up. Hopefully he will make him do some community service, like picking up trash, to pay off his fine to get his attention.
