Bill Cole and his grandson Cole Reed caught a 60 lb. alligator snapping turtle last week while jug fishing at Luxapalila Park. The two said they were jug fishing for catfish next to the swimming area of the Lux (YIKES!) Wednesday when they pulled the large terrapin up.
“I was barefoot and I was fixin’ to jump out of the boat when we got him in, he’s quick as lightning” said Cole. Cole Reed, a student at Hamilton Middle School, said the turtle was as strong as it looked: “He crushed that tennis ball like it was nothing, just crushed it.”
Bill Cole took the beast back to his home in New Hope and placed it in a small enclosure usually reserved for his dog. The longtime owner of Dixie Towing, Cole says he’s never seen one nearly this big and he hopes he doesn’t again. The snapper was transported back to the river Thursday afternoon and is said to be in good spirits.0
