A 63 year old man drowned last Thursday in the Luxapillia River.
Hugh Troy Buckelew was had been swimming in the river near the bridge at Waterworks and HWY 50 when according to witness, Rhonda Wallace, he appeared to slip and go under water.
Officer Christopher Smith was the first to respond on scene with Cpl Barry Goode and EMT’s arriving shortly there after. According to witness, Cody Tenney, he was on his lunch break and decided to have lunch by the river when Wallace ran up to him “screaming and crying” to call 911.
On scene Wallace could be heard screaming over and over, Please don’t let him be dead.” Wallace claimed that she and Buckelew were good friends and had decided to come swimming. According to Wallace, the two had been drinking all morning.
Investigators found a cooler containing Gatorade, water and 12 oz can of Bud Light.0
