Lowndes County rescue crews rushed to the scene of a car fire on Hwy 82 West around 9:50am Tuesday morning. Former Columbus High Homecoming Queen Neese Sanders said she was driving west on the bypass headed to MS State for an exam when her 1999 Toyota Camry began amitting nosies from the front end of the sedan. Sanders said she had thought she had blown a tire, because someone had pointed out she may have had a bad tire just last week.
“When I jumped out of the car, the hood was bubbling. I was gonna get my books out, but the fire spread too quickly” said Sanders.
Concerned motorsit Bernard Taylor witnessed the inferno and pulled over to help calm the now distraught Sanders. Taylor escorted her a safe distance from the blaze until Roderick Sanders, her father, arrived at about 10:15. Distrcict 5 Volunteers arrived on the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze shortly thereafter. Neese Sanders tole The Packet that she was worried about missing the final she was headed to. Sanders recently graduated from Coppin State University in Baltimore.
