Around 1:30pm Tuesday afternoon, Columbus Police officers rushed to the aid of a shooting victim in a home on 1219 20th St. North. April Davis was discovered by officers standing in her carport holding a small rag against the left temple of her forehead.
Davis told police that she had been shot by her ex-boyfriend Damion Dabar Peterson. Davis claims Peterson had come to her home to retrieve some of his belongings from when the couple had lived together. She said she told him Peterson that he wasn’t allowed on her property without a police escort, and that he had to leave. Davis said she then locked the front door and raced to the carport door to lock it as well. When she attempted to lock the side door, Peterson shot at her with a small caliber handgun, through the screen door.
The bullet glanced off of her forehead and deflected into the home. Startled and somewhat dazed, Davis managed to close the door and called 911. She told dispatchers that Peterson had fled the scene in a late model Buick LeSabre. Davis remained on the phone with operators until police arrived on scene minutes later.
Davis was taken to BMH-GT hospital via ambulance and was reportedly in stable condition. Officers David Hunt, Tabertha Hardin and Lance Luckey secured the scene as investigators arrived at the home. Led by Lt. Selvain McQueen, Investigators Harris, Cockrell and Brown processed evidence and relayed information on possible whereabouts of Peterson. Blood splatter was evident in the carport and in the doorway where the shooting occurred. [While investigators combed the scene, a boy reported to be Davis’ son stepped off a nearby schoolbus, but was quietly escorted away by a family friend. Davis’ sister also innocently walked up to the home by pure coincidence only to be told of the shooting.-CK]
Peterson turned himself in to Columbus Police around 5:00pm that afternoon and was charged with Domestic Violence-Aggravated Assault with a weapon. Davis’ official condition was unknown as of press time, but a neighbor told The Packet Wednesday that she was released Tuesday night in good condition.0
