Warren E. Gerber, Sr., age 90, of Columbus, MS, passed away April 20, 2011, at The Windsor Place. Mr. Gerber was born November 14, 1920, in Bloomfield, NJ, to the late Herman and Freda Dunker Gerber. He was the founder and operator of Gerber Metal Supply Company of Readington, NJ, for 43 years, from 1963 – 1986 until his retirement. Mr. Gerber was a long time member and former president of Suburban Golf Club in Union, NJ. He also was past board president of Wardlow-Hartridge School in Edison, NJ. His love was his family and golf. He and his wife, Doris, moved to Columbus, MS, from Stuart, FL, in 2005 and have been residents of Plantation Pointe. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gerber was preceded in death by brothers, Herman George and Robert Allen Gerber, both of Bloomfield, NJ.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Francis Gerber of Columbus, MS, son, Gary L. Gerber and his wife Sandi of Pottsville, PA, daughter, Gayle G. Peterson and her husband Evan of Ft. Worth, TX, son, Warren E. “Chip” Gerber, Jr. and his wife Maureen of Columbus, MS, brother, Richard Arthur Gerber of Brick, NJ, sisters, Joan Gerber Sansom of Fallbrook, CA, Janet Gerber Kain of Brick, NJ, Dorothea Gerber Westpy of Brick, NJ, Mary Perry Connelly of Asbury Park, NJ, Gladys Perry Forsyth of Brick, NJ, grandchildren, Doris Mitchell, Gary Gerber, Jr., Richard Gerber, Warren E. Gerber, III, Christopher and Emily Peterson, Cory and Olivia Peterson, Hillary and Layne Gerber, five great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made to the Warren E. Gerber, Sr. Memorial Fund, c/o Cadence Bank, P.O. Box 631, Columbus, MS, 39703. The entire proceeds from this fund will be donated to the Baptist Memorial Healthcare Foundation. Mr. Gerber’s family has made arrangements with the Foundation to enhance the intensive care unit patient family waiting area at the Columbus, MS, Baptist Memorial location.
Thomas Southerland Thomas “Andrew” Southerland, age 45, of Valley Glen, CA, formerly of Columbus, MS, passed away April 18, 2011, at his residence. Memorial services will be Monday, April 25, 2011, at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Columbus, MS, with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. Visitation will also be Monday, April 25, 2011, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church. Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Andrew was born February 25, 1966, in Columbus, MS, to Thomas D. and Nina Alexander Southerland of Columbus, MS. He was a 1985 graduate of S. D. Lee High School where he was a member of the band. Andrew was a twenty seven year employee of Northwest and Delta Airlines. He had a great sense of humor, enjoyed entertaining his friends, had a quick wit, was an avid animal lover, and leaves behind his pet dogs, Schooner, Lena, and Saffie.
In addition to his parents, survivors include domestic partner, William Zimmerman of Valley Glen, CA, brother, Paul Southerland and his wife Dawn of Cordova, TN, sisters, Lynda Reich and her husband Rickey of Fulton, MS, and Ruthie Moss and her husband Bill of Columbus, MS, nieces and nephews, Wil and Allie Southerland, T. J. Reich and his wife April, Ethan Reich, Erin Dougherty, Alex, Audrey, and Anna Moss, and great nephews, Zachary and Bradley Reed, and Addison Reich, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Class of 1985 at S. D. Lee High School, coworkers at Delta Airlines, and all in attendance who touched or have been touched by Andrew’s life.
