About 11:00 pm Saturday night, E-911 received a call about an attempted burglary in progress.  Robert Smith, Jr. (son of Mayor Robert Smith) and his wife Nedra heard someone shaking the patio door of their Liberty Cove home.  When Mr. Smith went to investigate, he watched a white man wearing a black shirt and hat run across the lot facing their house.  The man ran into the woods on the other side of the field.  When CPD Officers arrived on scene, Officer Wade Beard and his K-9 partner Bowdy, along with Ofcr. Thomas Culpepper entered the woods in search of the man.  Bowdy found him in a matter of seconds, circling the man as he lay there whispering, “Good dog…good dog…good dog…”  Once located, the man, later identified as Shawn Colin Franklin, was handcuffed by Culpepper and, with the help of Corporal Donnie Elkin, was led from his hiding place.  They took him back to the edge of the trees where Ofcr. Joshua Vandiver was waiting to assist.       [Once out of the woods, Franklin became enraged at this Packet reporter, saying, “I din’t give you permissshun to take mah pitcher!”  (He seemed drunk)  After a few photos, he tried to lunge at me.  He obviously meant me harm, but found himself face down in the mud with the officers on his back, having dragged them down with him. – JD] Franklin was escorted back to the house where he was placed in the back of Ofcr. Paul Garrett’s patrol car.  In the car, he repeatedly headbutted the passenger side window.  He was warned to stop and he stopped being violent, but continued to backtalk the officers [and threaten me – JD].       Shawn Franklin was charged with public drunkeness.  He avoided a burglary charge because no burglary tools were found.

Officer Stephen Kemp questions Shawn Franklin after he’s taken into custody.
